Grazing Advisor Program

Since 2008, Capital RC&D grazing advisors have provided one-to-one technical advice about a variety of grazing topics to farmers and graziers throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed in Pennsylvania, including all counties within the Capital RC&D region. The advisors pull from their combined 90+ years of experience raising a variety of livestock, implementing best management practices for pastures, record keeping, and transitioning to different grazing systems. They're available to help new and experienced graziers address issues such as pasture improvement, fencing, grazing planning, weed management, soil health, and forage species selection among other grazing-related topics.
Additional information is available in the Rotational Grazing/Pasture Management Farmer-to-Farmer Technical Advisement handout. You can also contact info@capitalrcd.org to find out about getting started with a grazing advisor.

Ann Basehore

Ann Basehore was raised on a dairy farm in Cumberland County, PA, but did not start grazing until she had her own farm and cheesemaking operation in Massachusetts. There she first grazed dairy cows and later transitioned to dairy goats, eventually authoring The Dairy Goat Handbook. Ann returned to Pennsylvania in 2017 and joined the Capital RC&D Grazing Advisor team in 2020 to help share her  knowledge and provide support for small ruminant graziers.

Donna Foulk

Donna Foulk has a passion for horses and integrated grazing as part of her first farm operation. Recognizing that horses have unique pasture requirements, Donna works with horse owners to plan appropriate species and implement best practices. Before joining the Capital RC&D Grazing Advisor team, Donna worked with Rutgers University and then Penn State Extension as an educator focused on field crops, forages, and working with the equine industry.

Duane Hertzler

Duane Hertzler transitioned his Perry County confinement dairy to a grazing operation in 1994. Duane is active with both the National and Pennsylvania Grazing Lands Coalitions and the Center for Dairy Excellence, which provided his first mentoring opportunities. Since that time, he has helped many new graziers discover the art of using grazing systems and will continue to do so as grazing advisor with Capital RC&D.

Brian Campbell

Brian Campbell has worked on grassfed beef operations throughout the MidAtlantic, was a community college instructor in agribusiness, and served as grazing specialist for NRCS-Maryland from 2018 to 2021.  He is a Certified Crop Advisor, Certified Forage & Grassland Professional, and earned a master's degree in agricultural sciences.  Brian enjoys working with all livestock producers and is especially interested in silvopasture and soil health.
