Grazing

Capital RC&D provides support for farmers that use rotational grazing techniques for raising livestock. Rotational grazing manages livestock using multiple pastures, some of which are subdivided into smaller paddocks. The livestock are then moved daily, sometimes more frequently, from one paddock to the next. Livestock have access to fresh pasture and the grasses and plants have adequate time to recover and regrow. This approach coupled with plant and soil quality practices provides healthy animals, farm business resilience, and wildlife habitat.
Through Capital RC&D projects and support available through partner organizations and agencies, graziers can work with mentors and grazing specialists at no cost, and may receive assistance to install fencing, livestock watering systems, stream crossing structures, and walkways that help minimize the impact of animals on the land.
A great way to support the graziers in our region is to purchase their meat, dairy, and fiber products at local farmers markets or through on-farm markets or websites. Another way you can support their work is to learn about specific aspects of grazing noted in photo captions below, reading the Growing Green Sustainable Grazing flyer or by visiting our Grazing Support page.

A tensile fence borders a green hilly pasture. Two trees can be seen along the fence. Cows graze on the distant hill. Behind the cows is a grove of trees. Blue sky and wispy clouds.
A group of people stand in a pasture and watch as brown cows walk in a line along a dirt path in the middle of this pasture. The cows are walking away from the group of people. There is a small grove of trees in the background to the right. In the distance you can see a distant mountain. Blue sky and small white puffy clouds
A small herd of goats are contained in a field by a temporary electric, portable fence. Pine trees are in the distance and the day sky is dark
