Buy Fresh, Buy Local Week a Success!
Capital Area RC&D and the Buy Fresh Buy Local Steering Committee organized and presented south-central Pennsylvania's 1st annual Buy Fresh, Buy Local Week this past September. We're proud to announce it was a success! The week was highlighted by events that allowed participants to bask in the glow of the growing local foods movement and to explore the variety and flavors of south central Pennsylvania's agriculture. It also celebrated the release of the first Buy Fresh Buy Local Consumers Guide (available on this website).
Many of the Week's participants took a self guided tour of farm markets and farm stands in Adams County using a guidebook developed by Cooperative Extension for the event. Others took the opportunity to appreciate the paring of locally brewed beers and some of the region's finest cheeses during a beer and cheese tasting event at Troegs Brewery.
On Thursday the 13th, Kim Miller, a farmer and respected speaker on agriculture and local foods spoke to a large crowd at Dickinson College about the value of choosing to promote the consumption of local foods. Mr. Miller spoke earnestly and effectively, as he was able to rouse good-spirited debate upon his conclusion. All were happy to have heard from him!
A sell out crowd enjoyed sumptuously prepared locally grown foods at a Harvest Dinner sponsored by the PA Association for Sustainable Agriculture. Folks were also able to take home some of south-central PA's bounty fresh from the farm to their table at Carlisle Central Farmers Market Grand Opening. Hundreds of people came to the market on opening day, and it has been bustling ever since!
The Buy Fresh Buy Local Campaign continues to plan events and inform consumers of the many and varied opportunities to "taste the gifts of our region." Watch the Capital RC&D web site or the Pennsylvania Buy Fresh Buy Local web site ( www.buylocalpa.org) for updates.
